Hi, I'm Andrew Fenwick, a Newcastle-based freelance
copywriter, marketer, web designer and journalist
working for the likes of The Guardian, Metro, NME, Dazed & Confused, Vice, Brand Republic and Oxfam.

Responsible for producing engaging print and online content on a daily basis, I've written extensively on politics, arts and culture for a range of top-end international publications, as well as producing a wide range of audio and video journalism.

A keen team player and confident communicator, in addition to freelancing for the likes of The Guardian, NME, Brand Republic and Dazed & Confused, I've worked as a staff writer at Metro – the UK’s largest daily freesheet – where I was tasked with staffing the paper's arts desk.

Recently, I've lived and worked in Prague as multimedia editor at Transitions Online, an NGO promoting freedom of the press in the former communist countries of Europe and Central Asia.

I also have experience working on the other side of the newsroom, having worked as a PR and marketing officer for Oxfam where I was responsible for delivering wide-ranging print and online media campaigns, and as a freelance copywriter having created key advertorials for outfits including XL Recordings and Ray Ban.

Passionate about the necessity of a free global press and the ever-changing tools at a journalist's disposal, I currently oversee the project management of Neweurasia, a bi-lingual citizen journalism portal covering society and politics in Central Asia.

Fully trained in web development and multimedia production, I’m skilled at producing audio and video packages to broadcast standard and in training others to do so, having taught on behalf of international organisations including Radio Free Europe and UNESCO.

Half-inching a pen might seem like a relatively minor offence but when Czech president
Václav Klaus slyly slipped a ceremonial ballpoint into his pocket
during a diplomatic press conference with Chilean leader Sebastián Piñera – scoring close to four million YouTube views in the process – he offered a rather literal representation of a government, and a leader, with a history of using underhand tactics for their own gain.

New York duo Sleigh Bells are like David Lynch at his most discordant. Dreamlike one minute and nightmarish the next, they craft melodious yet unsettling slabs of static-heavy electro-rock pitched somewhere between My Bloody Valentine and The Ronettes. Indeed, their
codified beats and nods to '60s pop
sound like a warped reflection of urban life, as evidenced on their 2010 ear-shattering debut 'Treats' an album that successfully, yet somewhat perversely, made the transition from the blogosphere to the U.S. Top 40.

It's interesting to compare the picture Lily Allen painted of London on her LDN single to that which Natty sings about on his recent debut album, Man Like I. Although both share a similar ska sensibility, you get the impression that Natty actually lives among
the city's immigrant communities
rather than just cycling through them on his way home to the suburbs.

In the liner notes to Fleet Foxes’ ‘Sun Giant’ EP, there’s a semi-fictitious story which asks what the area where New York stands today might have looked like almost 500 years ago, and
questions the significance of music in the natural world.
It’s a perfect introduction to the Seattle quintet. Beardy and bound by tradition, Fleet Foxes are steeped in history but there’s also a progressive, rebellious nature to their music, something which chief songwriter and singer Robin Pecknold puts down to the ubiquitous grunge legacy of his home city.

While working as a PR and marketing officer for Oxfam, I was responsible for planning wide-ranging
creative print and online media campaigns,
involving creating engaging press releases, liasing with regional and national media, developing a social media strategy, producing dynamic advertising and promotional materials, managing press briefings and photoshoots, planning fundraising events, and working with support officers to secure sponsorship and investment.

I am currently employed as project manager of Neweurasia, a bi-lingual citizen journalism portal covering society and politics in Central Asia, that is regularly cited by the likes of The Guardian, BBC and New York Times.

The role requires me to oversee staffing and recruitment, plan marketing and fundraising activity,
manage a large editorial and administrative budget, oversee a team of editors and support staff, plan future strategy,
organise journalism training courses across Central Asia, chair regular management meetings, and oversee technical operations.
Calling on my experience as both a print and multimedia journalist, I have taught on behalf of the likes of Radio Free Europe and UNESCO, on courses combining the traditional values of journalism with the skills required of reporters in the 21st century.

Teaching both trainee and established journalists, I have written and delivered courses covering areas such as
audio and video production, interview techniques, storyboarding and planning, social media and syndication,
lighting and sound, and post-production.

Combining multimedia presentations, seminars and exercises in the field, students and staff alike have commented that my teaching is both practical and engaging.
